HYGIENE IN THE OFFICE AND AT HOME
Hygiene is the foundation of dental health. Maintaining your oral health requires proper care at home and regular visits with our hygienists. Our wonderful hygiene team will thoroughly clean and investigate your mouth and then design a custom plan for you to maintain your health at home.
Hygiene and Re-care Exams
We recommend having a hygiene appointment every 3 to 6 months depending on the condition of your mouth. After your hygienist thoroughly cleans your teeth and gums, Dr. Stein or Dr. Waksman will perform a re-care visit, where they will check the overall health of your gums and teeth and perform an oral cancer screen.
Home Dental Care
Home dental care is important for maintaining the overall health of your mouth. We encourage all of our patients to perform oral care at home. Devices that can be used at home include traditional toothbrushes and dental floss, electric toothbrushes, electric flossers, rubber tip stimulators, sulcular brushes, tongue cleaners, gum irrigators (i.e. WaterPik), and mouthwashes. Because it is difficult to know which of the many options (or combinations of options) to use, we will use intraoral cameras to show you your mouth on a high-definition screen and help you choose a regimen specific for your oral condition. Our patients love the supportive, positive and comfortable approach provided by our incredible hygiene team. Having a proper approach to your oral hygiene is imperative to your oral health and your overall health.
Electric toothbrush – A power assisted toothbrush can remove 98% of the plaque in your mouth. Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are significantly more efficient at removing plaque and improving gingival health than manual toothbrushes. Daily use of an electric toothbrush is most beneficial for patients who readily build up plaque resulting in gingivitis.
Sulcular brush – A sulcular brush has one tuft of a regular toothbrush, thus allowing it to reach and clean tight corners and smaller spaces between teeth.
WaterPik – Oral Irrigation with water has proven therapeutic benefits. A growing body of evidence indicates that oral irrigation with water has therapeutic benefits and can improve adult periodontitis in as little as 14 days.
