Crowns & Bridges Dr. Stein and Dr. Waksman know that having a broken or unsightly tooth, or losing one or more teeth, can make you feel self-conscious and can make chewing and speaking a challenge. Crowns and bridges are two treatment options that can remedy these problems. Crown (also known as a “cap”) A crown is a dental restoration that fits over a tooth, replacing most of its enamel. This provides a strong and durable biting surface to decrease the risk of fracture. Crowns are used to restore broken teeth, old fillings that are failing, teeth that have had root canal treatment, and chipped or sensitive teeth. Crowns may also improve the appearance of natural teeth that are malformed, malpositioned or discoloured. When working in tandem with a dental lab, this process takes a minimum of two visits over a period of two weeks. Here at Centenary Dental, we create custom crowns in our office while you wait using CEREC 3-dimensional milling technology. This means that you will complete everything in one visit and will not have to go home for two weeks with a temporary crown that can potentially break or fall out in the interim. ﷯ Bridges A bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. When healthy teeth are present on either side of the space, crowns can be placed on them, and these are fused to a false porcelain tooth (called a pontic) that sits in the gap. Bridges cannot be taken out of the mouth because they are cemented onto the teeth in the same manner as dental crowns. ﷯ For more information about crowns or bridges, or to book an appointment, please call our Scarborough Centenary Dental office today at 416-281-4746.
