Wisdom/Tooth Extraction

Our goal is to retain as many teeth for you as possible! However, sometimes teeth need to be removed. We know that having a tooth removed can be frightening, so we will do everything we can to make the process as comfortable as possible for you.

Tooth extraction involves removal of the entire tooth, including its crown and root. Before having a tooth extracted, it is important to plan what you will do with the space afterwards. You may wish to leave it, or to restore it with an implant, bridge, or removable appliance. We will guide you through the advantages and disadvantages of each of these options. Once you are comfortable with your decision, we will book an appointment for the extraction. In an emergency, you will either be seen that day or, if more appropriate, be managed with medication until your procedure. We offer nitrous oxide sedation to help ease anxiety. We will then provide you with instructions for after treatment and a follow up appointment to make sure you are healing well.

Wisdom teeth are the third molars in your mouth and the last teeth to erupt. They usually appear between age 17 and 21 years but may begin causing problems earlier than this. If there is not enough space for your wisdom teeth to erupt fully, they can remain impacted. This can lead to inflammation, pain, infection, difficulty opening your mouth and decay and damage to adjacent teeth. We routinely take panoramic x-rays (panorex) to assess the jaw and surrounding structures, including wisdom teeth. If we feel that you may benefit from extraction of your wisdom teeth, we will refer you to an oral surgeon who will give you the option of having general sedation. For emergencies related to wisdom teeth, we will provide appropriate medication until your procedure date.
